In a small cottage over looking downtown Los Angeles, Mateo and his mother,
Nadia, have made a good life in the years since Mateo’s father died serving
with the Marines overseas. The summer holiday promises to unfold with its usual
good weather and balmy skies. Mateo is a good boy whose only problem is a
handful of local bullies whom he needs to out-run if he happens to stumble over
them when playing in the neighborhood.
But Mateo has an evil twin, an exact duplicate named Mazz
who comes from a planet on the other side of the galaxy where he’s been kicked
out of a dozen schools and is the despair of his father and an entire kingdom. Mazz arrives joyriding in his
father’s stolen space ship. He’s run away from a last chance military school,
kidnapped his guards and used the Amulet of Power, an ancient, sacred icon of
religious belief among his people, to turn those guards into creatures no
bigger than his thumb.
Mazz hopes he can hide on earth using his twin,
Mateo, as the perfect cover. But while Mazz is soon
fascinated by earth and its peculiar customs, most especially Mateo’s beautiful
mother, Mateo is less than pleased with the visit. Mazz
and his power amulet are great to have when the local bullies are chasing you.
And flying high above the skyscrapers of Los Angeles is a kid’s dream, but Mazz’s every adventure swiftly turns into a nightmarish
escapade of police chases, black eyes and broken windows.
Mazz has not only thrown Mateo’s quiet, happy life
into complete chaos, but Mateo is being blamed for every misadventure. Who’s
ever going to believe a boy who says that all his troubles are caused by an
evil twin from outer space?
And then, the amulet is stolen. Without its power, Mazz
has to ask Mateo to help him get it back. Mateo agrees to help and for the
first time in his life he breaks all the rules. He and Mazz
embark on a hair-raising chase to find the amulet before the thieves can figure
out its power.
In the end Mazz and Mateo find the amulet and punish
the thieves, but more importantly, the boys becomes
fast friends who have learned something from each other. Mazz
learns that giving is as important as receiving and Mateo understand that
sometimes you have to stand up for what’s right.
